Colleagues, supervisors, and subordinates are people you interact with every day, and you may even spend more time with them than with your own family. So how can you build good relationships? The following points will help you:

Appreciating relationships with colleagues

  • Teamwork and unity are essential at work; building good relationships with colleagues is extremely important.
  • Greet everyone when you arrive at the workplace.
  • Be friendly, humble, polite, and cheerful to leave a good impression on colleagues.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and enthusiastic work spirit, avoiding giving others the impression of laziness.
  • Regularly keep your desk clean, tidy, and organized.
  • Respect others, care for colleagues around you, and proactively help them (such as pouring tea, cleaning desks, etc.).
  • Learn and remember your colleagues’ birthdays.
  • Care about, ask after, and support colleagues and their families when they face difficulties or misfortunes.
  • Avoid isolating yourself or keeping distance from colleagues. No matter how close you are, always pay attention to your attitude, words, and behavior—especially with colleagues of the opposite gender.
  • Be mindful of your language and tone when speaking with colleagues in public places.
  • Take time to care for and water plants in your workplace.
  • Happily clean up old newspapers, discarded papers, used cups, and check office equipment such as clocks.
  • Avoid gossiping about colleagues’ private lives or their weaknesses.
  • Do not tell vulgar or inappropriate stories.

Learning how to interact with supervisors

  • Develop a sense of compliance with your supervisor; this helps you gain trust.
  • Be mindful of protecting your supervisor’s image, which also helps protect your own image.
  • When your boss arrives at the office, prepare a pen and notebook for taking notes.
  • When receiving instructions from your boss, ask for clarification if you do not fully understand.
  • To avoid mistakes when receiving tasks, repeat the instructions once to confirm accuracy.
  • Provide updates on work progress and report promptly when tasks are completed.
  • When traveling for work or unable to come to the office (except in unavoidable cases), you should personally inform your boss; even short absences should be approved.
  • Avoid bypassing the chain of command unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you are leaving while your boss is still busy, ask whether they need your help; if not, you may leave with peace of mind.

Building relationships with subordinates

  • Subordinates are not only your key support but also a valuable resource.
  • Sincerely ask about and care for each employee under your supervision.
  • Treat employees fairly.
  • Do not show authority in a rigid or oppressive way toward subordinates; the difference is only in job hierarchy, while both sides are equal in human dignity.
  • Encourage and motivate subordinates, frequently using positive and affirming language about their work and abilities.
  • Always be punctual when listening to reports from subordinates; listen and provide feedback attentively, avoiding complaints, impatience, or interruptions.
  • If subordinates frequently work overtime at night, pay attention to their safety and health.
  • Show strong concern when they are sick, stressed, or under pressure.
  • Learn to express gratitude, encourage, and reward subordinates promptly, especially in terms of morale.
  • Do not constantly complain or criticize their abilities; instead, help them improve their skills.
  • Good leaders should encourage subordinates and help them maximize their potential.
  • Prevent gossip or slander about subordinates.
  • Skills for giving feedback: start with appreciation and sincerity; use indirect criticism; acknowledge your own responsibility before criticizing; use suggestions instead of orders; criticize the work, not the person; never repeat past mistakes already addressed; and end with equality, respect, and friendship.
  • Be generous with subordinates and sincerely appreciate their contributions.
